I created The G.A.I.N. Plan not because I thought you needed another exercise and diet program, but because I was deceived by the evils of government agencies, political agendas, and mass marketing which led to limitations in my performance. In my youth, I was duped into believing that orange juice was good for me and that fat was very bad. I believed that all I had to eat was the RDA of protein. I believed that all proteins were created equal. I believed that 3 squares per day was going to fuel my desire to be Superman in the gym.
In the 1950s Dr. Ancel Keys started his “Seven Countries” study that would eventually vilify the saturated fat and cholesterol as the cause of all heart disease. What followed was a cluster of manufacturing and government policy disasters. Manufacturers did a few things. First, they removed ALL fat from food in the 1980’s. Remember fat-free Snack Wells? A cookie that was suddenly good for you? Second, they had to replace the fat with something to make the food palatable. So they used sugars like high fructose corn syrup and they started hydrogenating vegetable oils to make them behave more like saturated fats (more solid at room temp). Further, they hid sugar in labels with names like “evaporated cane juice” and “cane extract” because juices and herbal extracts were good for you. Did these changes lead to a healthier country? No! We now have a higher rate of heart disease and diabetes than before!
In recent years we have figured out that the hydrogenated vegetable oils lead to trans-fats that are very toxic leading to higher rates of heart disease. The FDA has gone to great lengths to remove this from our food. We have also begun to realize that some fats, like omega-3 fats, are in fact healthy. We have realized that there are essential fats, essential amino acids, but no essential carbohydrate.
The real toxin is sugar! In fact, I would call sugar KRYPTONITE!
Every athlete wants to be Superman. I know I did when I was in high school. Unfortunately, I fell into the trap of being encouraged to drink my juice and eat my sugar rich fat free foods. I was even told that I had to have sugar after my workouts to boost my anabolic insulin response! In reality this just weakened me like kryptonite. The spikes in blood glucose would lead to desensitization to insulin, crashes in my blood glucose that lead to cravings, weakness, fatigue, muscle breakdown, depression.
Further, I believed that eating 3 times a day was the way we should eat. So, I would eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Between meals, the insulin crash led to all of the kryptonite-like effects above. I needed to eat more often with more of the right foods! I needed the right supplements to destroy and replace the kryptonite.
Through extensive research and years of practical application I have developed the principles of performance nutrition which I present to you in The G.A.I.N. Plan. These principles help you to realize that kryptonite is robbing you of your strength and you really can be Superman. I have come to realize that we need to eat more often. We need to eat more protein than the RDA recommends. We need to eat protein more evenly throughout the day. We need to eat high quality protein, as all proteins are NOT created equal. There is one compound in particular that makes one protein stronger than another. The proverbial "Anti-Kryptonite".
The G.A.I.N. Plan Book will clear up all of these myths for you and teach you the right way to eat for maximal performance and goal attainment. Whether you want to build muscle, burn fat, or maintain your healthy physique for longevity, The G.A.I.N. Plan will lead you in the right direction.
